New Team at Studio XX:
In early November, Studio XX welcomed aboard *Paulina Abarca-Cantin* as
Director General. Paulina has worked in the areas of film, television,
3D animation, digital visual effects, IMAX, theatre and live performance
for over twenty years. After graduating from the University of Toronto
and the National Theatre School of Canada, she followed her first love
of theatre, acting and directing numerous productions across Canada,
notably at the Shaw and Stratford Festivals. In 2005, she launched Women
in Film and Television International's (WIFTI) annual Short Film
Showcase held in over fifteen cities worldwide, an event she continues
to produce. She has produced 3D animated short films, virtual characters
and digital visual effects projects, notably for Darwin Dimensions, Big
Bang FX/Animation, CDMED and the BBC. She is a member of ACTRA and UDA
and most recently held key positions on the boards of Québec AnimFX,
ELAN, FCTNM, QDF and WIFTI.
We take this opportunity to thank Studio XX's outgoing Director General
*Marie-Christiane Mathieu* who was at the helm from 2004 from 2007, for
her inspired work, creativity and dedication. Among her many
contributions, Marie-Christiane was instrumental in spearheading
endeavours and events such as Event X, designed to mark Studio XX's 10
years of existence in their full magnitude. We wish her the very best in
all future undertakings.
Studio XX also welcomed a new Board of Directors this month comprised of
President *Deborah VanSlet*, Vice-President *Hélène Prévost*, Secretary
*Corina Macdonald*, Treasurer *Lucie Marchand* and Administrators
*Alexandra Guité* and *Julie Leblanc*. A heartfelt thank you to all of
the Studio's departing Board members for their precious contributions
and in particular, to Past President *Reisa Levine* and Past
Vice-President *Sharon Hackett* for their energy, ideas and generous spirit.
The Studio warmly welcomes back *Stéphanie Lagueux* as Webmistress and
Coordinator of the Martricules archiving initiative. The talented *Annie
Bonsaint* and *Sara Mandana Tizhouch* join her aboard this project. Many
thanks to *Brooke Van Mossel-Forrester* for her exemplary work as
Interim Webmistress this past year. Last but not least, we thank our
devoted departing system administrator *Mark Heckman* and welcome aboard
*Izaak Branderhorst*.
Studio XX weathered major transitions this year and we recognize and
salute the efforts of Production Director *Bérengère Marin-Dubuard*,
Programming Coordinator *Chantal Dumas* and Administrative Assistant
*Maria Pires*.

New Resident Artist :: Magali Babin
Mid-November 2007 until end of January 2008
Magali Babin is a well-known Montreal sound artist, admired for her
delicate and minimalistic style.
During her residency, Magali will set-up her technical playstation for a
future audio and visual interactive performance, inspired by TOR. TOR
(The Onion Router) is a decentralized network enabling the user to
render internet connections anonymous through an onion router technique
(via superimposition). Conceptually, Magali questions the relationship
to intimacy, both within a technological context or a public
environment. Her residency will allow her to become familiar with Pure
Data software which will be used to create an interactive environment.
This research project will result in a working set-up for further
experimentation regarding surveillance techniques, simulation concepts
and technological hoaxes.
Magali will present the results of her research as a live performance in
the near future. Stay tuned...!

HTMlles 8 Festival 2007
Studio XX's HTMlles 8 Festival concluded to rave reviews! This year's
programming theme of crowd control addressed issues of mobility and
migration and invited artists and practitioners to provide
contextualizing interpretations.
The migration of products, people and ideas, and creative activists
caught in the current maelstrom of differing state censorship and
intellectual property laws pertaining to the still state-less World Wide
Web were elemental through-lines in a variety of stellar works presented
by artists such as Freida Abtan
<http://www.htmlles.net/2007/en/Freida_Abtan_e>, Mylena Bergeron et
Caroline Hayeur
<http://www.htmlles.net/2007/en/Caroline_Hayeur_Mylena_Bergeron_e>,
Analog Tara <http://htmlles.net/2007/en/Analog_Tara_e>, AGF
<http://htmlles.net/2007/en/Antye_Greie_AGF_e>, Kayle Brandon
<http://htmlles.net/2007/en/Kayle_Brandon_Heath_Bunting_e> and Alejandra
Perez Nunez <http://htmlles.net/2007/en/Alejandra_Maria_Perez_Nunez_e>.
*HTMlles 8* benefited from a diverse, ecclectic audience and inspired
synergy with the *FNC*, the *SAT* and partners such as *La Centrale*,
*GIV*, *Galerie Oboro*, *Artivistic*, *Galerie Yergeau* and the
*Monument National*, resulting in unforgettable encounters.
An HTMlles 8 Festival DVD Catalogue is being produced comprising artist
biographies and web-links and photographs, as well as recorded video
documentation. This DVD will be ready for downloading directly from the
fabulous www.htmlles.net <http://www.htmlles.net> site by mid-December.
Excerpts will be launched to a live audience at the December 13th Femmes
br at nchées 66 Salon <fb_annonce66.html>.
Studio XX congratulates and thanks the hard-working HTMlles team on a
magnificent undertaking as well as its partners and sponsors for their
support.

Take Back The Tech <%20http://www.takebackthetech.net>
"Take Back The Tech!" :: http://www.takebackthetech.net/
25 Nov to 10 Dec 2007 *Reclaiming ICT's to End Violence Against Women*.
This 16-day campaign aims to engage greater participation by all civil
society, especially grrls and women ICT-users, to think about this issue
in diverse contexts and realities. By calling for all users to reclaim
control over technology, we are asking for the right to define, access,
use and shape ICTs for its potential to transform power relations,
towards a vision and reality of equality.
"Take Back The Tech!" is initiated and organised by the Association for
Progressive Communications, Women's Networking Support Programme (APC
WNSP). We are a global network of women who support women networking for
social change and women's empowerment, through the use of information
and communication technologies (ICTs). We promote gender equality in the
design, development, implementation, access to and use of ICTs, and in
the policy decisions and frameworks that regulate them.

New CALQ Grant Program Aimed at Supporting Emerging Artists
Studio XX was pleased to attend the most recent Rendez-vous novembre
2007 - Montréal métropole culturelle where Mme. Christine St-Pierre,
Minister of Culture Communications and the Status of Women announced the
launch of a new grant program aimed at supporting up-and-coming artists,
new media artists among them.
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec's (CALQ) new Grant program
will assist artists and writers with five or fewer years of practice who
have never received financial support from the Conseil. The program
compliments the Conseil's regular Grant program. It is intended to
enable upcoming artists and writers to obtain initial recognition from
their peers and a first grant from an organization recognized for its
dedication to the development of the arts and literature.
The deadline for applications is December 14, 2007. Registration forms
and detailed information are available in English and French from the
CALQ offices as well as on the website

Female Directors: An Endangered Species?
Did you know that according to an unpublished study, women directors
currently receive a mere 11% of funding from Telefilm Canada's Feature
Film Fund? At SODEC, directors reaped 14% of available funding alloted
to all production funds. At Societé Radio-Canada, only 1.5% of dramatic
series are directed by women. As of five years, projects directed by
women, be they documentary, drama or auteur cinema, have greatly
diminished, along with the size of their budgets. There are no signs
that this trend is about to change. The results of the study, undertaken
by sociologist Francine Descarrieres, will be presented at an upcoming
symposium focusing on the topic of women in the director's chair. This
event will allow us to examine more closely the reasons behind this
phenomenon and to allow for a positive exchange. Action points and
solutions will be tabled.
Les Réalisatrices Équitables (www.realisatrices-equitables.org) et
l'ARRQ (www.arrq.qc.ca) cordially invite all female directors working in
Québec to this important meeting. Women working in documentary, drama,
animation, film, video or in new media are all welcome. We need your
input and ideas!
