I had the same issue with Windows 7 on a dual boot grub-install should
fix it. Seems the installer does of a mess of this. For some reason in
my case it detected it and yet it was not there  after restarting the
machine. grub-install /dev/sda in my case fixed it. but this is after i
was booted into the system.

btw another trick to look for is make sure you can mount said partitions
within grub if you can mount them then you have no issue cause windows
xp is very easy to recover the mbr using the install disk and doing a
repair i believe fixboot and fixmbr.
