I have no idea what is your "use of root" nor what are "these users", so
it's hard to answer.

Yes.  Remote desktop is something you should stay away from, as
a general rule, except for "remote debugging" or if you're logging
remotely into your own sessions.  Otherwise, you're much better off
logging in remotely via ssh which does not suffer from those
security risks.
