[MLUG] kinda OT: Update on cabling a small office

Hi all,

This is just FYI, thanks for all previous recommendations about cabling
a small office.

Hard, physical wiring is a requirement for most of the place I mentioned
because there will be IP phones. It took about 1 week to sync with a
vendor and confirm a meeting (which is happening this Monday). I am told
most cabling/wiring companies also do telephony, most places I called
dismissed Asterisk and of course pitched their own system's (in one case
over $12K in hardware only for a ~18 phones setup). Several wouldn' t
touch with a 10 ft. pole any wiring in a residential setting (meaning
being friendly to the place, some drilling and concealing the cabling
with existing wood framing, etc). I plan on asking for a PoE
(power-over-ethernet) + according switch option pricing too.

All places I contacted do the evaluation for free (provided a few hours
after on-site visit), and this kind of job is apparently a matter of 1-2
days at most. I'll provide another update when I get pricing and a
decision is taken.

Cheers,

Fabian
