Hi again!
I am writing the first part of the articles on Linux as an introduction to Install-Fest. If you have the clearance to share your blog, I would be very much interested to use it (BTW, the articles will be in Persian).
After giving lots of thought and contemplation, I have decided to devote the first article almost entirely to Windows. The idea is to show that by adopting Windows, users are giving up _a lot_. Here are the few points I have come up with so far:
1. Upgrading is at the mercy of the company, MS here, and the users have almost no control over when the new version would be out, which features it would support, and how much it would cost to switch to the new version.1.1 Consequently, many new features in hardware and/or software world are just not being supported for years until finally the new OS comes out, e.g. 64bit architecture, transparency, ...2. As a normal process of upgrading, users _have to_ upgrade their hardware as well, almost forcefully.3. After installing the OS, Windows, are are left with an incomplete system. You will normally need to install:
a. Firewallb. A normal filemanager (I am still bewildered why Windows is not offering a decent filemanager)c. A decent internet browser (imagine people stuck with IE6 or 7 for years who were deprived from tab browsing and ...)d. Media players, recorders, ...e. Archivers/back up programsf. document viewers, e.g. PDF, DJVUg. A decent AntiVirus/AntiTrojan/Antispyware/...h. Office suitei. compilerj. mathematics related softwaresk. **** parental control **** (I am so appreciative of dansguardian that my child is only allowed to surf in Linux even though she could use Windows for other tasks)
I will appreciate comments, suggestion, ... with this very first article.
Thanks again,
Mostafa

I wrote a blog comparing the linux open
source path to the Microsoft path. If my employer does not want to publish it,
then I will donate it.

Hello list!
I talked to one of the members on #mlug and got encouraged to announce it here
in the list. I am only a Linux user with strong belief on its concept and the
underlying philosophy. I usually do not miss the tinniest opportunity to make a
case in favor of Linux. Once I did a presentation on Ubuntu marketing
strategies etc and the business people who did not know anything about
OpenSource or Linux for that matter, were kind of confused about being free and
making profits but I am sure I caught their attention and now most of them know
Ubuntu and what it means ;)
Anyways, my new endeavour is to introduce Linux into the Iranian community of Montreal (there are
certainly many who use Linux in their work or universities but my main target
is the average Joe). To this end, I am going to firstly publish a few articles
as introduction to Linux and afterwards announce the Install-Fest (around april
2009).
What I would like to ask you guys is:
1. Any help with regard the articles: (statistics comparing Linux with Windows
or MacOS, cons and pros of either OSes, ...)
2. Any help I could get with the install-fest event (experts willing to
participate, ideas of how to organize such an event - I have no experience but
have googled around to learn a bit from other LUGs in the US or Europe, ...)
I'll send further emails as soon as something new comes up and hopefully we
could make it happen with your help.
Best regards,
Mostafa
